In Amritsar's industrial boilers – leather tanneries (beamhouse, finishing), textile processing (dyeing, printing), food units (papad, pickle, spice, dairy), hotels (laundry, kitchen), and rubber goods – steam condensate is often contaminated with carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the breakdown of bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity in the hard Ravi river water (alkalinity 250-400 ppm) and groundwater (300-500 ppm). CO₂ dissolves in condensate to form carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), lowering pH to 4-5, causing severe thinning of steel condensate pipes ("red water" and pinholing leaks). Our treatment includes neutralizing amines (cyclohexylamine, morpholine, diethylaminoethanol – DEAE, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol – AMP) and filming amines (octadecylamine, tallow amine). Neutralizing amines volatilize with steam and raise condensate pH to 8-9. Filming amines form a protective monolayer on metal surfaces, creating a hydrophobic barrier. For Amritsar's long-distance condensate return systems (e.g., large tanneries with multiple buildings or textile mills with distant steam users), we recommend a blend of low- and high-distribution ratio amines: morpholine (distribution ratio 0.8) protects near the boiler, cyclohexylamine (3.5) protects far points, and DEAE (1.2) provides mid-range protection. Our Condensate Treatment 401 (amine blend) also contains an oxygen scavenger (erythorbic acid or DEHA) to remove residual dissolved oxygen. Dosing: 10-50 ppm of amine product, based on feedwater flow. For food-grade applications (dairy, papad, pickle, spice), we supply FDA-approved amines (morpholine and DEAE under 21 CFR 173.310) and filming amines approved for steam that contacts food.
